On Thursday, the theater classes performed their final projects in the auditorium, which consisted entirely of student-made productions. The program was called “Night of Theatre.”
“The best part for me was that not only were all of the acts student performed, but they were also all student written, which I thought was a great way to showcase the talents of not only the performers, but the writers in the theatre department, because a lot of the sketches were really well written,” senior Vivek Thomas said.
There were a variety of genres on showcase in the program, from the humor of “Celebrity Impressions” to the touching and introspective performance of “America the Great.”
“A lot of the fun of “Night of Theatre” was being able to exist in this variety of different theatrical performances,” Thomas said. “Obviously there was the improv and sketch, but there was a lot of great drama from the advanced acting classes. Night of Theatre was a nice blend of all of the theatre classes to create a great showcase of what we’ve been working on.”
“America The Great” was a play set in a post-apocalyptic world. While the “Night of Theatre” was their final exam and chance to perform, students in this play were also able to convey important messages in today’s society.
“Our skit was a devised theatre type thing, which is a little theatre act either inspired by current day events or historical events,” senior Madi Hinkle said. “Our one-act was based off of current day America, and it was based in a post-apocalyptic world. The message was that we shouldn’t let current day politics separate us, and we should work together as Americans to stop the corruption of our government from becoming bad.”
In the end, the night was a culmination of the work the theatre classes have put in through the year, and showcasing this talent helped bring the classes together.
“[It] had a lot of great dialogue, a lot of powerful stuff in the drama department and a lot of funny stuff from the sketch comedy department, so that was definitely my favorite part of working in Night of the Theatre. Not only being able to perform and write all these funny sketches, but also getting to hear and see what other people wrote and how well it was performed,” Thomas said.
