On Friday, AP Studio Art students competed in Canvas Clash, a classroom competition in which students get a total of twenty minutes to make their best piece of artwork. In the end, students vote on what they think is the best piece. After deciding on a winner, the class goes through and critiques other students’ work.
“They only have twenty minutes to create their art,” art teacher Nathan Fry said. “it’s very easy to give constructive feedback on something that’s only twenty minutes long. It’s not going to be that great in most cases, and the students aren’t super attached. There aren’t any hurt feelings if someone has something negative to say about something they have only worked on for twenty minutes.”
The competition allows students to show off their artistic skills in a fun, competitive way. It also provides students with an easy and friendly way to be introduced to the world of critiquing.
“It’s just a fun competition,” senior Jared Spohn said.. “Because we only get twenty minutes, it helps us practice painting and drawing faster.”
Despite the challenge, Spohn said he enjoys this project because it allows him to paint in a fun environment.
“It’s a memorable making experience, since AP studio art has a large workload,” Spohn said. “Because we have to create a portfolio throughout the year, having fun activities like this is a good way to take a break from the workload because most of the time that we’re in class, it’s just studio time to work on a big project.”
