When and why did you create your own sports league?
I originally started a little bit before summer started last year. I started it because I wanted to have more people included in sports, and some people who aren’t included because you don’t often see people over the summer, and it just brings the community together, and it’s really fun and it brings your competitive side out.
What sports leagues have you started so far?
I have two sports leagues; over the summer I had a basketball league, there were 60 participants, and then right now during the school year I have a 7-on-7 football league with over 40.
What are the obstacles with running a sports league?
Some of the obstacles are just getting people to show up on time and having to schedule all the games because they have lives and this isn’t their top priority. So for a lot of the time I have to find a ton of substitutes for them around 30 minutes before the game. Having people actually show up is the hardest part.
Where do the games for the leagues take place?
My basketball league is here [Center Grove High School], usually in the SAC, but if the SAC is occupied we usually go to the gym. [For] my football league, we go play at Center Grove Middle School North.I know coaches and the Middle School North football field is open so we’re able to use that and I have a key to the school.
What is your favorite moment from the sports leagues?
My favorite moment is probably the community that brings people in because there are a lot of people here that don’t really talk to each other that much, but once they get going and everyone just meets up it’s just really good conversations with people, and they start becoming friends.
