Trick or Treating
This is the staple of Halloween for so many people. For little kids, it’s a chance to collect as much candy as possible while walking around dressed as their favorite movie character or something scary. For the adults, it’s a chance to spend time with their family outside and steal the good candy from their kids’ baskets after they go to bed. Whether you’re an active trick or treater or a retired one, trick or treating is an activity enjoyed by everyone, and that’s what makes it so great. Some of the best trick or treating neighborhoods in Center Grove are Kensington Grove or Fair Oaks/Makena Ridge/Windsong. They offer a large area and good holiday decor.
Haunted House
This is the classic teenage tradition of Halloween. It’s not really for little kids or older people. It’s mostly plain and simply marketed for teenagers. The scare level varies from haunted house to haunted house, but its partakers usually try to act like they’re not spooked, even if they definitely are. Haunted houses are a great place to hang out with your group of friends or significant other. It’s also a unique activity that is only open during the Halloween season. Hanna’s Haunted Acres is an obvious choice for a scare, featuring six attractions on the south side at 7323 Hanna Avenue. But Thirteenth Avenue and Indy Scream Park are two other options for you to get thoroughly terrified.
Carving Pumpkins
From spooky to silly, pumpkins show the carvers creativity and interests. Adding an LED candle inside allows you to decorate your porch for halloween night with something you personally customized. Every pumpkin creation is unique as it is a canvas to the imagination of all ages. It’s also a wonderful time to connect with your friends and family. Try a U-Pick pumpkin patch at Pleasant View Orchard in Fairland, where you can ride a pumpkin wagon to find your best option. It is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closer to home are Anderson Orchard in Mooresville and AppleWorks in Trafalgar.
Watching Scary Movie
This activity is great for groups of friends or by yourself to get into the Halloween Spirit. There’s a plethora of different types of scary movies to pick from and all of them bring different emotions and memories to the surface. I distinctly remember watching my first horror movie with my friends after we finished handing out candy in 7th grade. The feelings surrounding Halloween don’t get much more intense than when watching a scary movie on a dark October night. Regal Cinemas in Greenwood has two showings of “Halloween III: Season of the Witch” on Halloween night. If you want to stay home on Halloween night, consider classic Halloween films like “Beetlejuice” or “Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
Handing out Candy
As kids grow up and the desire to go trick or treating wanes, many still find happiness when handing out candy to the younger generation. My friends and I have handed out candy for the last few years and we’ve loved it. It’s wonderful seeing the same happiness on a little face that you used to have. One thing to consider: a lot of kids have allergies. Put out a teal pumpkin of stickers and pencils, non-food treats, so kids who can’t eat the treats still have some fun.
