What makes you so interested in doing hair?
I would always see a bunch of people have cute hairstyles and I really wanted to try it out. I enjoy doing it because I love how it can complete an outfit and make an outfit look even more dressed up.
How do you learn to do different hairstyles?
At first, I would get most of my hairstyles from influencers, but as I’ve been learning more on the techniques, I’ve taken some hairstyles I’ve seen and put my own spin on it. I’ll normally see a video on a hairstyle and watch it multiple times to get an idea on how to do it and then I just go straight into trying it myself. Sometimes I improvise as I’m doing a hairstyle. I learn with a lot of trial and error. From there I am able to figure out what worked and what didn’t work for me.
How long do some styles take to do? Do you make separate time to experiment?
A hairstyle normally takes me around 20-25 minutes. Dragon braids definitely take the longest. I would say a simple half up half down takes the shortest amount of time. Normally I don’t take additional time to learn how to do a hairstyle because a lot of hairstyles are the same technique. I can normally just go straight into doing the hairstyle, and sometimes it ends up with me just winging it.
What are some of the tricky parts of doing hair?
The hardest part about learning to do hair is definitely French and Dutch braiding. I’m still trying to clean up my Dutch braids, and I can’t do a French braid on myself yet. I don’t do a lot of people’s hair so it’s harder for me to do difficult hairstyles on other people. It’s definitely easier to do hair on myself just because I do it so much more.
What are some tips or suggestions you would give to those who want to get into hairstyling?
When you first start learning to do hair you need to make sure you know the basics and techniques. You can’t just start into a hairstyle when you have never done something like it before. I use certain products to make it easier to style my hair. Styling cream helps keep your hair in place which is good because you don’t want your hair going everywhere. I use some for almost every hairstyle.
Is hair something you could see yourself doing as a career?
I could definitely see myself doing something with hair because I absolutely love doing it. I just think it is so fun, and I think that if I could do it as a job I would learn a lot more.
