For Andra Veleta, science was never just about labs and lectures – it was about leadership. That’s why she took the initiative to launch the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) at the school, creating a space where students passionate about science could grow beyond the classroom.
Founded this year, the new SNHS chapter offers members more than just an academic title. It provides opportunities for meaningful service, community outreach, and environmental action – all grounded in scientific values. From tutoring to tree planting, members are encouraged to use their skills to give back.
“It’s not just about GPA or taking the hardest science classes,” said Shawn Liu, a member of SNHS, “It’s about building a community of students who care about applying science to real-world problems.”
One of the group’s first major projects was an Earth Day tree planting at Maple Grove Elementary. Members dug, planted, and mulched trees for hours – all without an audience. But the impact, they said, wasn’t about being seen. It was about planting something that would outlast them.
”The trees were like a symbol,” said member Addison Badger. “Even though no one was watching us, we knew they would speak for themselves.”
With SNHS now in full swing, students have a new way to channel their academic interests into real action. Whether it’s through peer tutoring, environmental projects, or science outreach, Veleta’s vision is already making its mark.
