On Tuesday, Pubs Club paid a visit to the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington to take a tour of the Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media and Technology as well as the Media School. Students who may have interest in media-related fields could see what the school has to offer.
The Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media and Technology, which is based out of Assembly Hall and manages all the social media, photography and videography for IU athletics, was the first stop on the tour. Students were able to see the broadcast facilities, the press room, the photography and media equipment that students use, receive a tour from the Senior Assistant Athletic Director Jeremy Gray and even take shots from the floor of Assembly Hall.
“I really enjoyed going and being able to see what could be a possible job for me in the future, and how all of the photography and videography and broadcasting in the Cuban Center works,” junior Lucas Moore said.
Sophomore Ashlin Kelly said the tour of the Cuban Center gave her insight into the way sports media works at IU. She said, “My favorite part about the trip was getting to see the different parts of the Cuban Center. It was cool to get to see the behind-the-scenes of all the work that goes into the school’s media teams.”
After finishing at the Cuban Center, students went into the heart of IU’s campus to visit the IU Media School, located at Franklin Hall. Sophomore Jade Glover said the fall evening on campus was a highlight.

“My favorite part was walking around and seeing the campus where I could possibly be going to school one day,” Glover said. I enjoyed learning about the different programs that IU has to offer and the ways I can be involved if I choose to go there in the future.”
Senior Olivia Williams plans to be a double major in early childhood education and early childhood special education. However, she saw some possibilities in the trip that she had not considered before.
“I got tons of valuable information about the programs,” Williams said. “I’m interested in learning more about broadcasting and being on the air. The most valuable information is from the trip to the media center. I want to ask how I can get more internships regarding journalism in education around the world.”
At the media school, students spoke with an admissions representative and three student ambassadors before touring different areas of the Media School. Students were able to see the Indiana Daily Student newsroom, the equipment rental facility and broadcast studio.
Sophomore Bri Barlow enjoyed playing basketball at Assembly Hall during the Cuban Center tour, and she also said a highlight was “listening to what students at the media school thought while giving us a tour. “
Throughout the afternoon, several Center Grove publications alumni came to meet and talk with students as well, sharing how publications helped them not only in the Media School but in other majors as well.
“I enjoyed meeting all of those people, and also I really enjoyed the Media School,” Moore said. “It solidified my choice that I want to go to IU for college and study sports media. The campus is super nice and the connections and outlets you could have to get a job would be amazing.”
