While many sophomores are still trying to discover what they want to pursue in the future, some already know. Sophomore Savannah Waddick pursues her passion as she volunteers at Pine Meadows Horse and Rescue.

“I work with injured horses. I groom them, I turn them out, I feed them their medicine, and I give them their food,” Waddick said.

Waddick has dreams of being a veterinarian. Grooming and taking care of the injured horses requires care and tenderness that are also necessary for a career in animal medicine.

“I want to be a vet so it’s a start because I want to be able to work with bigger animals,” said Waddick.

Pursuing her passion and preparing for a future career are not the only reasons that Waddick chooses to volunteer at the horse and rescue.

Waddick also chooses to spend her time at the horse and rescue because of a valuable lesson learned from her mother.

“I wanted to help out the community,” Waddick said. “My mom is big on helping everyone so when she found out about this horse and rescue, I thought it would be a good idea to put myself out there.”

Putting herself out there has paid off for Waddick. She has volunteered at the horse and rescue for around a year, and her love for the job has continued to grow.

“It shows me that there’s something bigger than just grooming a horse,” Waddick said. “They have feelings. They have a heart, and there’s a lot of things that go into taking care of an injured horse.”

Waddick’s volunteering has not only helped her to learn valuable lessons about taking care of injured horses, but it has also shown her the importance of helping out the community.
