Indoor percussion creates new, futuristic sound

When Indoor Percussion takes the floor, a cube glows white over a darkened floor. The percussionists walk–without drums–on the floor looking like aimless pedestrians. Then the group is announced, and the cube begins to pulse, drawing the white-clad drummers toward it.

“Our show this year is called Pioneers, but there is a futuristic spin on that term,” said sophomore and synth player Corey Combs The show is based around pioneers and the struggle that they face. The futuristic aspect of the show shines through the uniforms, props, and music.”

Though the instruments are the same as years past, the show uses all of the new effects, like the cube and individual lights, to help illustrate the futuristic theme of the show.

“There are no special instruments for the show. We are using the ones we typically use, the vibraphone, tenor drum, bass drum and snare drum,” said senior Sam Bauer, who is part of the “pit” and plays vibraphones.

Bauer and other seniors have experienced different themes over their four different years, each giving a different vibe to the show.

“I’ve done indoor percussion for four years,” said four-year indoor percussion

bass player Kip Shaffner. “My favorite theme would have to be from my sophomore year which was the pursuit of perfection. And I’m very excited for this year’s theme, which has some new concepts that we’ve never messed with before.”

Pioneer has an aesthetic like nothing they have ever done before.

“I’m really excited for the new theme. I enjoyed being in indoor percussion last year, I love how you can put so much passion into playing,” said sophomore Colin Herron, who will be entering percussion for his second year.

Pioneers will take parts of the past and parallel it with the future. They will be performing today during STaR along with the rest of the CG musical groups.
