After the Social Studies National Honors Society was created in the fall and the induction ceremony was held in December, they met for the first time in the new year to play trivia in sponsor Sarah Terrell’s room.
The leaders planned this meeting in advance. Project Coordinator Chinmay Karyekar ‘27 and Secretary Aryan Kapoor ‘27 helped keep score at the meeting and ask the trivia questions.
“We meet during AIMs and brainstorm ideas, stay in constant communication and divide responsibilities so everyone contributes and nothing is overlooked,” Kapoor said. “First we had to decide on an idea for the meeting plans, and we decided on jeopardy after we all brainstormed questions.”
With the jeopardy format, the leadership team aimed to have a good time while also learning and practicing historical facts. Siya Hazariwala and Kapoor wrote the questions for the Jeopardy match.
“We wanted to have a fun way to review history with other fun facts that felt competitive and exciting,” Kapoor said. “The jeopardy format encourages quick thinking, collaboration and competition which makes learning more memorable.”
Social Studies Josh Hart plays jeopardy in his classes, which prompted the idea for this meeting. These questions were created specifically for SSNHS. The questions were also made to cover a variety of topics as well as mixing in other categories like a teacher trivia and random trivia.
“Mr. Hart’s fun jeopardy game in APUSH really inspired us to do one for SSNHS. We had to make sure the questions were not too niche or vague so we chose different types of history for three of the categories (US, World, and European history) to help everyone gain and share knowledge,” Kapoor said. “Also we chose history teacher trivia and a random trivia section to make the experience more fun and unpredictable.”
The club plans to host additional events, focused on helping club members have fun, learn about social studies and discover opportunities the field could offer for careers.
