American Sign Language
Students at Carmel, Fishers and New Castle are offered Sign Language classes as part of the world language curriculum. If this course was implemented at CG, students would learn American Sign Language as well as information about deaf culture. Rather than taking the traditional pathway for languages such as Spanish or French, students could immerse themselves in the world of ALS. It would be a different way to get language credits and support inclusion of deaf people by teaching students how to communicate with them.
Advanced Science, Special Topics: Zoology
Fishers High School offers a science course for students with a passion for Zoology. In this class, students learn about the biology of specific animals and the behavior and relationships between wildlife species. At Fishers, the course also includes live animal observations and dissections. This would be a good class for Center Grove to offer for students who are interested in working with animals, and it provides a more niche option for science class than the ones currently offered.
AP Seminar
This AP course is a popular course students are offered at other high schools, such as Carmel. At Carmel they offer this class to advanced English students, and in the class they are taught how to analyze arguments, conduct research and communicate findings through writing and oral presentations. Center Grove should offer this class for students as an Advanced English class because it is good preparation for college or jobs students may have after high school.
Jewelry
Jewelry making is a hobby kids have known to enjoy across all ages. At Fishers High School they turned the hobby into an art. In this class, students learn how to work with metals and other materials used to make jewelry, as well as learning about the history of jewelry making. This would be a good addition to the art classes for students who may not be into the more classic arts, and it would be a fun elective for students who enjoy this hobby.
Elective Physical Education: Yoga
Franklin High School offers yoga as a gym class. Yoga would be a chance in the day to relax while still being active, instead of doing sports and workouts during gym. Not everyone likes the same kinds of activity, so having more options such as yoga would be great for students to choose what they think they would enjoy best.
5170 Plant and Soil Science: Gardening
Gardening is a hobby people like to pick up to do in their free time, and at Fishers High School they have a science class where you get to practice gardening. Combining hobbies and sciences helps students to be more engaged in science classes. In this class students learn about plant science while also getting to garden in class for hands-on learning. If Center Grove offered this class it would provide more types of science classes and could be a better class for students who struggle to enjoy science.
