When you reach the lunch line and see the doughy dessert options, confetti, chocolate chip, double fudge, and M&M, it can feel like an impossible decision. However, you should always reach for an M&M cookie, nothing else. Not only does the candy they withhold provide a unique, satisfying crunch that holds its shape, but they have a superior texture contrast against the soft chewy dough.
While a celebratory confetti cookie might seem inviting at first glance, its cream center is anything but pleasant. When I first tried it in middle school, I was thoroughly disappointed. The filling made the dough soggy and fell apart in my hands! What’s even worse is that this treat happens to be highly processed, contains excessive sugar (roughly 32% by weight), and utilizes synthetic flavor and dyes. People often describe them as underwhelming, overly sweet, or with an artificial taste. Overall it misses the desired gooey texture found in other cookies, and if I had to put this on a tier list it would earn fourth place.
In third place is the double fudge confection. While keeping its shape it easily can overwhelm one’s tongue with the layered rich chocolate flavor, and has high calories, sugar, and fat content. If not done right, they can even have a bland, underwhelming, or waxy taste despite seeming indulgent. Not to mention the chance that they’d end up being overly dry and dense in a way that not even a smooth and nourishing carton of milk could soothe you. So why risk a sickeningly sweet or heavy feeling to haunt you around the lunch room when you could just skip this option altogether?
In second place is the classic, (and obviously sweet), chocolate chip cookie that people often reach for. While keeping a balanced chocolate flavor instead of overpowering the taste unlike the double fudge cookie, it can feel too plain because the texture stays the same throughout. Not to mention how the treat is the least eye-catching out of all the provided options, and constantly runs the risk of having the contained chocolate melt into a puddle. Why risk ending up with a messy, melted chocolate puddle when a better choice is right in front of you?
That better option is the M&M cookie. The colorful candy pieces immediately make it the most eye-catching dessert in the lineup, standing out against the more ordinary choices. Even more importantly, the candy shells help the chocolate keep its shape instead of melting completely into the dough, ensuring every bite has the same satisfying crunch. The soft, chewy dough pairs perfectly with the crisp candy coating, creating a balance the other cookies simply cannot match. Confetti cookies turn soggy, double fudge cookies can be dense and overwhelming, and chocolate chip cookies often feel too plain. The M&M cookie avoids all of these problems at once.
In the end, the lunch line decision isn’t difficult. Compared to soggy confetti cookies, heavy double fudge, and plain chocolate chip, the M&M cookie clearly comes out on top. With its bright appearance, satisfying crunch, and balanced texture, it’s the one dessert you should always choose.
